  • Administration
    Orally through tablets or syrup
    Can be administered via injection if high risk of non-compliance
  • Chlorpromazine
    Acts as an antagonist in the dopamine systems - reducing the action of the neurotransmitter
    Dopamine antagonists block dopamine receptors in the synapses, reducing dopamine action
    Initially dopamine levels are higher, but production is then reduced
  • Chlorpromazine
    According to the dopamine hypothesis, the dopamine-Antagonist effect normalises neurotransmission in key areas of the brain reducing symptoms like hallucinations
    Also works as an effective sedative, calming people with schizophrenia
  • Side effect - Tardive Dyskinesia
    Uncontrollable movements, especially around the mouth
    • An EPSE - symptoms in the brains cerebral cortex

    Low blood pressure
    Abnormal sexual functioning
    Rarely coma and death
