  • Left Realist consider 3 main causes of crime;
    • Relative Deprivation
    • Marginalisation
    • Subculture
  • Relative Deprivation means how deprived someone feels in relation to others, the main people who experience this is the working class and become a criminal to gain status
  • Marginalisation means groups who are marginalised lack both clear goals and organisations to represent their interest so resort to violence
  • Subculture means a group sees a collective solution to relative deprivation so will still subscribe to mainstream goals but can't achieve them legally so do street crimes to close the relative deprivation gap
  • Young argues we are living in 'late modernity' and the growing wealth gap and rise of individualism have created cultural inclusion (ie material goods) but economic exclusion
  • Left Realists consider the solution to crime is greater police involvement and accountability for a multi-agency approach
  • Examples of Government Policy on left realist solutions is ASBOs and New Deal which provides training/subsided employment to young people to stop acts of offending
