  • Increased number of clashes at sea between Dutch and English after introduction of Navigation Acts.
  • The Dutch were commercial rivals although fellow republicans – had five times the trade the English did.
  • Anglo-Dutch War 1652-4.
  • Initially war very popular but expensive and achieved very little.
  • 1653 onwards English fleet more successful under Admiral Blake.
  • War alienated army and many protestants.
