Behaviourist approach

Cards (5)

  • Scientific methods used
This is because the behaviourist approach focuses on observable behaviour within controlled settings, using methods that can be replicated. This shows that it was an influential approach in the development of psychology as a science.
  • Practical applications
This is because the principles of conditioning have been applied to a wide range of real-world behaviours. For example systematic desensitisation, which is a treatment for phobias. This shows that the approach has led to other therapies to treat disorders.
  • Use of animal research
This is because of the lack of validity in applying findings to humans due to the difference in brain structure. This shows that you may not be able to apply the approach to humans as thought processes are underestimated.
  • Lack of biology
The behaviourist approach the emphasis is on the environment determining behaviour. However, there is evidence from family and twin studies to suggest a genetic basis for some behaviours. This shows that the behaviourist approach is not complete.
  • Free will v determinism
The behaviourist approach’s emphasis is on the environment and experiences cause behaviour. This means the approach views free will as an illusion and suggests that an individual has no conscious control over the way they act.
