    • conformity
      A change in a person's behaviour or opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure from others in line with the groups behaviour or opinions.
    • 3 types of conformity
      Internalisation, identification, compliance
    • internalisation
      when a person genuinely accepts a groups norms. person privately and publicly changes opinions. It is a permanent change.
    • identification
      something about the group we admire. Goes along with the group but may not agree with everything privately.
    • compliance
      'going along with others' in public but privately not changing opinions of behaviour. The behaviour will end as soon as group pressure stops.
    • two process theory
      informational social influence; normative social influence
    • informational social influence
      'who has the better information?' If you are not sure, you may assume the group knows best and that you were wrong. This is a cognitive process.
    • when does ISI happen?
      in new situations
      where there is ambiguity
      crisis situations
      when there is an expert in the group
    • Normative social influence
      'fitting in.' This is an emotional process.
    • When does NSI happen?
      with strangers - we don't want them to reject us.with friends - we want their approval.in stressful situations when we need social support.
