  • Urban form refers to the physical characteristics that make up built-up areas, including the size, shape, density and organisation of settlements. It can be considered at different scales: from regional to urban, neighbourhood and street and is evolving continually in response to social, economic, environmental, political, and technological developments.
  • A government report on 'Urban form and infrastructure in the UK' (2014), reported that the UK's urban form is characteristed by 64 'primary urban areas', including one built-up megacity region (London), six large metropolitan areas (Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and Sheffield) and 56 towns and cities with more than 125,000 people.
