  • Tiberius did not maintain a positive relationship with any of the differing groups in Rome.
  • His relationship with the senate was strained by their sycophancy and his own manner, the plebians were not impressed with his frugal an understated style of administration.
  • Although within the principate the senate did not play a meaningful role anymore, Tiberius still attempted to involve them in rule.
  • Either through unwillingness or inability, the senate failed to act purposefully.
  • It is clear that Tiberius became more exasperated with the senate throughout his reign.
  • His relationship with the plebs was not good.
  • He didn't spend large amounts of money on games or largesse as Augustus had, however this meant a full treasury could be used to aid in disaster in Rome or the provinces, or to develop the city further.
  • Tiberius tried to promote the economy and reduced the sales tax on traded goods.
  • Tacitus says that he directly interfered in a shortage of money by distributing 'a hundred million sesterces among specially established banks, for interest free three year state loans' and credit was restored.
