Masdar City, Abu Dhabi

• The Masdar Initiative wishes to focus on renewable energy to diversify the future energy mix and depend less on oil. It is hoped that the zero-carbon, zero-waste city will be home to 40000 residents when completed in early 2020s, providing an ultra modern example of sustainable urban living.
• Masdar City harnessed the use of solar energy and local winds. A barajeel provides cool air and a fine water mist to reduce need for air conditioning. A venturi tunnel was used under the Siemens headquarters in the direction of prevailing winds to maintain a cooling airflow, cooling public spaces without any energy costs.
