human nervous system

Cards (10)

  • how does the nervous system work?
    • information from receptors passes along cells (neurones) as electrical impulses to the central nervous system. the central nervous system is the brain and spinal cord. the central nervous system coordinates the response of effectors which may be muscles contracting or glands secreting hormones.
  • the nervous system enables humans to react to their surroundings and coordinate their behaviour
  • stimulus -> receptor -> coordinator -> effector -> response
  • what is the reflex arc?
    • bee stings finger (stimulus)
    • stimulation of pain receptors
    • impulses travel along a sensory neurone
    • impulses are passed along a relay neurone via a synapse (chemicals are released causing impulses to be sent along the relay neurone)
    • impulses travel along a motor neurone via a synapse
    • when impulses reach muscle, it contracts
  • what are effectors?
    • all your muscles and glands which respond to nervous impulses
  • what are motor neurones?
    • the neurones that carry electrical impulses from the central nervous system to the effectors
  • what are sensory neurones?
    • neurones that carry information as electrical impulses from the receptors to the central nervous system
  • what is the central nervous system?
    • consists of the brain and spinal cord in vertebrates and in mammals it is connected to the body by sensory and motor neurones
  • synapses connect neurones and diffuse chemicals to the next neurone
  • what are reflexes?
    • reflexes are rapid, automatic responses to certain stimuli that don't involve the conscious part of the brain, they can reduce the chances of being injured
