Bowlbys monotropic theory

Cards (7)

  • Critical period
Time in which an attachment will form
  • Emotional care 'mother love'
Babies become most attached to those who are most responsive and sensitive to their needs. Caregiver sensitivity is therefore key
  • Social releases
Features such as looking cute smiling and crying help the parent attach to the baby. Infants are programmed yo attach to whoever responds to their releasing stimuli
  • Monotropy
Indicates one primary attachments figure is important
  • Hierarchy of attachment
Infants form secondary attachments and these are organised in a hierarchy, with monotropy at the top
  • Internal working model
The relationship with the primary attachment provides a template for all future relationships. this generates expectations about what relationships are like
  • Continuity hypothesis
This is the concept that the type of attachment child has in infancy will continue into adulthood. for example a securely attached child will become securely attached adults
