Highlights not only the suppression of man's freedom but the suppression of nature. The scene diminishes as the men return to routine work and they are back to CL.
• CONTRAST TO WT: Man's freedom is embraced. WT becomes a distraction from the horror that is war. 'They know their roles' WT serves as an entity capable of combining the soldier's instrict to express themselves. Everyone plays a part and all is accepted. Even when Henderson dies, Barnes 'begins reciting the poem in a spotlight' Barnes is given the front stage to commemorate his friend. Poetry as a 'spontaneous overflow of emotions' and Roberts n Pearson allow the men to express.
