Modernity and Individualisation

• Ulrich Beck (1992) and Anthony Giddens (1992) argue that in modern society, traditional norms, such as the duty to remain with the same partner for life, lost their hold over individuals
• People seek what Giddens call ‘Pure Relationships’ - only exists to satisfy each partner’s needs and not out of a sense of duty, tradition or for the sake of the children (Results in high divorce rates)
• Rising divorce rates ‘normalises’ divorce and further strengthens the belief that marriage exists solely to provide personal fulfillment
