  • blackburn - there is little evidence that anger managment reduced recidivism in the long term. mainly because the application stage is based on role play which is conducted in an enviornment which doesn't reflect real life doesnt cover all possible situations a trigger can arise in real life. the controlled role play scenarios are very different to a busy pub enviornment , therefore anger managment may not actually alter thei behav when they encounter that situation in real life.
  • the national anger managmenet package was trialed with offenders age 17-21, there were initial issues of not taking seriously but it was ultimately considered to be a success, offenders reported high levels of self control and increased awareness after the course. However this could be down to social desirability bias , any measure of effectiveness is a self report methods use in prison. Initially they may over report their acts of hositility or bias to appear 'hard' they also may take part as a way to get out of their cells, so their reponses would lack sincerity, may lie to get benefits
  • There was little difference in anger ratings between non violent and violent offenders, suggest anger is not the cause, many crimes are not motivated by anger, for example fraud or burglary, not impulsive this would suggest anger management would not have an effect on recidivism . Other explanations personality.. differential association
