Cards (6)

  • One prominent difference between face-to-face and virtual relationships is fact that self-disclosure tends to occur much faster
  • People self-disclose more quickly online because of anonymity. In virtual relationships, no one knows your true identity, so you feel less afraid of rejection. Unlike in real life where revealing personal information might lead to judgment or negative feedback, online platforms provide a safe space to express yourself without concern.
  • there is much less risk of rejection in virtual relationships and people can share personal experiences and thoughts without risk of the intimate information getting to the people they know.
  • Reduced cues theory states that the absence of non-verbal cues online causes people to behave differently than in face-to-face settings. Without seeing facial expressions or body language, social cues are reduced, leading to deindividuation.
  • Deindividuation occurs when someone hides behind a screen name or avatar, losing their personal identity. This frees them to express themselves in ways they wouldn't in real life. They may share sensitive personal details more readily online without the fear of immediate judgment. Can lead to behaving in ways which show a lack of inhibition
  • lack of inhibition can lead to online comments and posts which are hyper aggressive and extreme
