-Researcher bias and a loss of objectivity as Bowlby himself collected and interviewed the thieves. He diagnosed who were affectionless psychopaths and who had suffered deprivation.
-Bowlby may unconsciously collected and interpreted the data which would support his hypothesis.
  • Practical application
-there has been positive, real world changes which have benefitted the economy.
-Bowlby's research highlights negative outcomes which has resulted from deprivation.
-Has resulted in changing in hospital times and staffing ratios in the day.
-Infants cognitive and emotional development is not hindered and develop a positive IWM. Therefore, reduces criminal activity. This reduces strain on the criminal justice service and NHS.
  • Deprivation VS Privation
-Bowlby fails to distinguish the difference between deprivation and privation.
-Rutter argues that privation (failure to form an attachment) has a more negative impact than deprivation. Shown in Romanian Orphan study that maladaptive behaviour was greater in infants who has never had maternal care than those who has partial care.
-Bowlby underestimates the influence of privation.
