  • Introduced to Humanist ideas in Italy. after an academic career, he became the dean of St. Paul's school (1512). His one surviving sermon was very critical of the standards of catholic church and clergy
  • this has caused historians to consider Colet to have began the rise of protestantism in england
  • in 1510, H7 granted a license to Colet to establish St. Paul's school, erasmus crafted the first curriculum, stressed the importance of languages such as greek and latin being learnt as spoken, causing literacy and education to rise significantly
  • colet rejected the scholastic's Aristotelian methods, promoting more Platonist ideas. this approach to universities like Oxford and Cambridge was highly controversial, but was supported by monarchs like H7 and H8
