  • In the play Hamlet, by famous writer William Shakespeare, our eponymous character Hamlet displays a mental conflict with himself. His suppressed desires, refusal to trust the significant people in his life, and subsequently delaying taking revenge on his uncle all signify an intense internal battle.
  • However, despite this, Hamlet also has severe conflict with the King, his uncle Claudius, after discovering he murdered his father. As we progress through the play, the pairs witty remarks and implicit disapproval of each other establishes a pseudo relationship that eventually leads to the struggle for survival.
  • Both of these conflicts can be considered significant in the aspect of character development, however through Shakespeare’s use of forceful, striking imagery and bold literary techniques, I believe that Hamlets conflict with Claudius is superior in terms of importance
