  • francise/suffrage - Franchise and suffrage both refer to the ability/right to vote in public elections. Suffragettes were women campaigning for the right to vote on the same terms as men.
  • Magna Carta - A charter signed by King John in 1215 guaranteeing certain liberties to his subjects.

  • Great Reform Act 1832 - Anyone who owned property over £10 could vote in elections to the House of Commons. More people could vote, though some poor people lost the vote.

  • Representation of the People's Act 1918 - Men over 21 – many of whom had fought for their country in WWI – as well as women over 30 who owned property could vote
  • Representation of the People's Act 1928 - All men and all women aged 21 and above were allowed to vote.
  • Representation of the People Act 1948 - Plural voting was abolished. This mainly affected a few constituencies where there were two MPs rather than one, as well as the fact that there were MPs for both Oxford and Cambridge Universities that only graduates of those universities could vote for
  • Representation of the People Act 1969 - The voting age was lowered from 21 to 18 years old
