• Functionalists argue that in modern society that the nuclear family has replaced the extended family
• Willmot argues that the family is now a dispersed extended family such as a family were relatives are geographically apart but maintain frequent contact
• Finch and Mason found half of their sample of the wider extended kin had cared for a sick relative but this was due to reciprocity that more often fell on daughters then the son
