    • “Here.”
    • Short sentence
    • Suggests a domineering way of giving a present. There is a hint of contempt in her tone.
    • “It will blind you with tears like a lover.”
    • Simile/ personification
    • Highlights that a large part of being in love is the risk of being left heart-broken. Just as an onion stings our eyes and brings us to tears when we cut it, so this suggests in some way we may be brought to tears by another person‘s heartlessness.
    • “It will make your reflection a wobbling photo of grief.”
    • Imagery - metaphor
    • Suggests the upset lover is gazing at their own reflection in the mirror and crying at the same time - the tears can distort your reflection.
    • Word choice of ‘wobbling,’ also suggests that love can leave you unbalanced, and the word ‘grief,’ makes clear the pain and anguish love can cause.
    • “I am trying to be truthful.”
    • Single line stanza
    • Highlights that you have to be honest to make a relationship work. Plosive alliteration of ‘t’ sound conveys frustration - the fact that she is trying suggests that it isn’t particularly easy to be truthful.
