  • Roosevelt's 3 R's were
    • Recovery - end the banking crisis, increase incomes, improve production
    • Relief - immediate action, from hunger + poverty, projects for unemployed
    • Reform - social security, intervention for banking
  • Roosevelt took advice from a group of people called the Brain's trust.
    There was a special congress session to set up new agencies.
    During the first 100 days Roosevelt gained support from the nation through 'fireside chats' of which there were 30 explaining his actions and what their impact would be
  • Tackling the Banking Crisis
    • Asked congress to pass the emergency banking act (EBA)
    closed banks for four days to do checks on their reliability
    (only financially sound banks were allowed to re-open)
    • This brought confidence back to the people
    He then asked people to put their savings back into the banks:
    • $1 million deposited
    (immediate crisis relief)
    • Insured deposits of up to $2500
    (restored confidence)
  • New Laws and alphabet agencies:
    • Congress passed laws to help agriculture
    AAA: Agricultural Adjustment Act
    • Industrial recovery
    NIRA: National Industrial Recovery Act
    • Unemployed
    FERA: Federal Emergency Relief Administration (relief payments)
  • He also helped to save government money in the process of introducing these new laws and acts (economy act)
    • Reduced government running costs by 25%
    Raised funds - beer and wine revenue act meant that purchase could be taxed
