Acids

• In the 17th century, an Irish chemist called Robert Boyle used a taste test to identify acids and bases. He realised that acids feel sour and alkalis feel slippery on the tongue
• The name acid comes from the latin word for sour - ‘acidus’
• Corrosive means a chemical that will attack and destroy living tissue such as skin and eyes by a chemical action
• Citrus fruits (lemons, oranges) contain citric acid
• vinegar contains ethanoic acid
• Tea contains tannic acid
• Fizzy drinks contain carbonic acid
• An ant sting contains methanoic acid
• Stomach acid contains hydrochloric acid
• Car battery acid contains sulfuric acid
• vitamin C contains ascorbic acid
• All acids contain the element hydrogen
