First New Deal

  • NRA: National Recovery Administration
Worked with major industries to set out codes
e.g. quotas, controlled prices, set wages, limited working hours and the banning of child labour.
    • Companies were not forced to join, but they quickly realised the benefits of doing so
    (2.3 million businesses took part)
    • Stopped competitive industries from bankrupting + improved working conditions
    • Gave them the right to join unions
  • However, with the NRA, there was little insurance that companies who were members were following all guidelines and rules.
Some represented the 'blue eagle' simply to gain more customers and failed to go through with certain aspects of it, such as banning child labour or limiting working hours for their employees.
