  • hypothesis: the population of Grasmere has aged due to economic factors.
  • reason for location: Grasmere is a popular tourist destination in the Lake District National Park. It is also accessible from our school by coach and is a safe environment.
  • method: we used a random sampling method at 3 different locations.
  • method: over a period of 15 minutes at each location, tally charts were made of the age of people passing by.
  • method strengths: The data can be easily collected and graphed to show the results. It was also easy to carry out and does not require any specialist equipment.
  • method weaknesses: People may look younger or older than they are so some of out results could be inaccurate. People may be counted more than once. It could be argued that the time period was too short.
  • secondary data: This data showed that there has been a significant house price increase in Grasmere compared to Thornton.
  • results: showed that the majority of pedestrians in Grasmere surveyed were over the age of 30, with a significant amount being over 51.
  • presentation method: we presented our data using a triple bar chart.
  • presentation strengths: it very clearly shows which age group is most dominant along each of the 3 areas. It is also easy to spot any patterns or anomalies.
  • alternative presentation methods: could use a pie chart or a histogram.
  • risk assessment: busy roads - walk in pairs and students told only to cross the road at crossings. Injury - walk in pairs, each group had a first aid kit. Risk of verbal abuse from he public - students told to be polite and there were specific meeting points.
  • conclusion: our hypothesis was true as Grasmere's population has aged due to economic factors.
  • evaluation (sample size): there was limited data as only 3 sites were chose.
  • evaluation (bias): The methods were open to some kind of bias - people may have misjudged someone's age as the method was opinion based.
  • evaluation (reliability/validity): Internal validity - the data was reliable and could have been collected by someone else and applies to my fieldwork. External validity - data and conclusions can relate to other villages in the Lake District . The results might not be same but the conclusions will be.
  • evaluation (alternative data): A questionnaire could have been created, asking people their age, income and where they live to get more accurate results.
