George W. Bush asked the UN security council to support the use of force to disarm Iraq - Bush would go ahead without UN backing.
Britain were in support of USA
France + Russia vetoed invading Iraq and so did Germany.
USA, Britain and a few other countries invaded Iraq anyway in March 2003.
No authorisation/without Security Council
Bush essentially made the UN irrelevant.
April 2003: Saddam overthrown
May 2003: Security council passed resolution accepting USA + BR as occupying powers, and at request of Iraq appointed a new UN assistance mission to Iraq (UNAMI)
