  UN sent a peacekeeping protective force into Bosnia

  • UNPROFOR were already at work in Croatia which had declared independence by this time. (Troops were overstretched)
• Tasks were to:

  • Protect Sarajevo airport and convoys of food + medicine being flown in
  • Protect convoys of civilians being transported across Bosnia by the International red cross
  • Assist the UNHCR to deliver humanitarian relief through Bosnia
• Peacekeepers were...

  1. Allowed to shoot past (rather than at) Serbs who were trying to block food convoys

  This tactic was unsuccessful

  • UN personnel ended up having to plead with Serbs to let forces through and so as a result Serbian forces saw the UN as weak.
