General Aided saw disarmament as an attempt to weaken him
As a result he attacked the UN.
5 June 1933: Security council passed unprecedented, unanimous resolutions - all necessary measures taken against attacks, or encouragement of attacks, against the UN.
Specialised forces: US involved $25,000 reward for the capture of Aided.
$2.5 million spent a day by UN but violence and looting continued.
3rd October 1993
US mission to find General Aided failed.
2 helicopters shot down
18 US troops killed
UN peacekeeping troops had to send out recue missions
31 March 1994
USA withdrew its troops (severely weakened the operation)
November 1994
UN agreed to withdraw its troops from Somalia by 31 March 1995.
Warlords still opposed to each other and although there was no more famine, the lack of political stability meant that the UN's intervention in Somalia was overall a failure.
UN unable to fulfil its aims of restoring law and order along with long-term peace + helping Somalis rebuild their country.
