  • General Aided saw disarmament as an attempt to weaken him
    • As a result he attacked the UN.
    5 June 1933: Security council passed unprecedented, unanimous resolutions - all necessary measures taken against attacks, or encouragement of attacks, against the UN.
    • Specialised forces: US involved $25,000 reward for the capture of Aided.
    $2.5 million spent a day by UN but violence and looting continued.
  • 3rd October 1993
    US mission to find General Aided failed.
    • 2 helicopters shot down
    • 18 US troops killed
    • UN peacekeeping troops had to send out recue missions
  • 31 March 1994
    USA withdrew its troops (severely weakened the operation)
  • November 1994
    UN agreed to withdraw its troops from Somalia by 31 March 1995.
    • Warlords still opposed to each other and although there was no more famine, the lack of political stability meant that the UN's intervention in Somalia was overall a failure.
    UN unable to fulfil its aims of restoring law and order along with long-term peace + helping Somalis rebuild their country.
