  • Reductionism
    Reduction of complex systems to simpler components that are more manageable to study
  • Holism
    Concept that considers the whole person that has physical, social, psychological, and spiritual parts that are woven together and cannot be separated
  • Behaviourism
    Reductionist as it breaks up complex behaviour into stimulus response units for ease of testing in the lab
  • Biological approach
    Reductionist in the wat it explains human behaviour and psychological states at the level of the gene or neuron
  • Psychodynamic approach

    Reduces much of our behaviour to the influence of sexual drives and biological instincts and often views as a holistic explanation
  • Cognitive approach
    Accused of machine reductionism by presenting people as information processing systems and ignoring influence of emotion on behaviour
  • Social learning theory
    Reduces complex learning to a handful key processes though they do at least place emphasis on cognitive factors that mediate learning and how they interact with influences
  • Humanistic approach
    Formulates a holistic approach to understanding human behaviour. Involves investigating all aspects of the individual, including effects of interaction with others and wider society
