Unit 5: Formula Writing and Naming

Cards (9)

  • Metals are atoms and non-metals are molecules (covalent)
  • diatomic: iodine, bromine, oxygen, fluorine, chlorine, nitrogen, hydrogen
  • ionic - electrons transferring in which the metal gives/loses electrons to the non-metal which gains electrons
    polyatomic + non-metal = ionic
roman numerals only necessary if multi-valent
  • One charge:
    • alkali
    • alkaline earth
    • aluminum
    • zinc
    • silver
  • ide - non-metal on PT
    ate/ite - polyatomic ion (back)
  • Nomendature - a set of rules that dictates how compounds are names to ensure that everybody does it the same way
  • Oxidation numbers for a covalent compound indicates number of shared electrons
  • Binary acids (H+ & other element)
    • named after anion it is bonded with
    (CN or Cyanide is exception)
    • hydro
    • _ic
    • acid
  • Oxy acids ( H+ oxyanion - non-metal element + O that is an ion)
    • name polyatomic ion
    • ate to ic / ite to ous
    • acid
