The multi-store model of memory was first proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin. They first proposed that there are three different unitary stores whereby the information passes through. This is done through a linear process.
2.
Information from the environment is received by the sensory store through the five senses (touch, smell, auditory (echoic), visual (iconic) and taste). The capacity for this store is high with a duration of less than half a second.
3.
Once the individual pays attention to the information, it can transform to the short term memory whereby the capacity is only 7+-2 items with the duration being 15-30 seconds. The information is encoded acoustically. In order for information to remain in the short term memory maintenance rehearsal must take place. This is the process of repeatedly verbalising or thinking about a piece of information.
4.
For the information to transfer to the long term memory, elaborative rehearsal must take place. This is a memory technique that involves thinking about the meaning of a term to be remembered as opposed to simply repeating it to yourself over and over.
5.
The long term memory has unlimited capacity and the duration is potentially forever. Information is encoded semantically.
6.
Information can be passed from the LTM back to the STM through the process of retrieval.
