  • WRITER’S CONTEXT
    • “Who wrote it?”
    • Knowing the writer’s life, values, assumptions, gender, race, sexual orientation, and political views.
    • The author's life and what they believe. 
    • Factors surrounding the author and their life that might have influenced the work.
  • READER’S CONTEXT
    • “Who's reading it?”
    • Reader’s previous experience, values, assumptions, and political and economic issues.
    • Two people reading the same book might interpret it differently based on their individual contexts.
  • SOCIAL CONTEXT
    • “The world around it”
    • Cultural, historical, and societal influences that shape a story’s themes, characters, and events.
    • What was happening in society when it was written or when you're reading it.
    • Looks at the broader society
  • LINGUISTIC CONTEXT
    • “The words themselves”
    • Requires the readers to analyze the language , form and structure of the text.
    • Analyze the diction or choice of words 
    • Examine the text use of sentences, clause, phrases, line cuts, etc.
    • Observe the use of figurative language.
    • Analyze the mood and tone of the text.
