  • In the 7th year of prophethood, the Quraysh mounted pressure on Abu Talib to abandon or surrender the prophet, but when he refused, the Quraysh decided to Boycott Banu Hashim.
  • The terms of the Boycott were that nobody would converse with any member of the Prophet's tribe, call on them, send food or drink and intermarry with a Hashemite or trade with them. This agreement was written and hung on the kaaba.
  • The hashmites were compelled out of the city where they stayed in a narrow gorge called Shaab Abu Talib(a property of Abu Talib) In the outskirts of Makkah.
  • The members of Banu Hashim And Banu Muttalib suffered immensely. They lived in dire conditions and faced starvation.
  • The pagans did not allow anyone to deliver any necessities to the Hashmites and they were forced to eat grass and leaves of trees.
  • Crying of the children due to hunger and starvation could be heard outside of the gorge.
  • Sometimes relatives would ignore the ban and smuggle food inside the gorge.
  • The boycott strengthened the faith of the Muslims and they were more determined than ever to see their mission successful.
  • At last, some people were moved by the suffering of Banu Hashim and decided to interfere and lift the ban, but when they went to take out the document, termites had eaten it up and only the name of Allah was left on it.
  • The boycott of Banu Hashim lasted for 3 years.
