The substrate binds to the active site, and bonds become less stable. This forms an enzyme-substrate complex and the enzyme remains unchanged. The shape of products is not complementary to the shape of the active site, so they can't stay bound.
What is the induced fit hypothesis?
When the enzyme and substrate are in close proximity, they bring about slight changes in each other's shapes. The substrate and active site mould so that they fit together.
