Cards (13)

  • Who developed the MSM?
    Atkinson & Shiffrin (1968)
  • What are the sections of the MSM
    • Stimulus from environment
    • Sensory register
    • STM
    • LTM
  • Describe how memory is stored/processed according to MSM
Stimulus from the environment enters the sensory register (info on other card). If we pay attention to the stimuli, the memory is passed to stm. Information is stored mainly acoustically, with a capacity of 7+/-2 items and a duration of 18-30 secs this means the information must be rehearsed. Through the process of prolonged maintenance rehearsal, the memory is passed to ltm. This has an unlimited capacity, and duration of 'up to a lifetime' and is encoded mainly semantically. For info to be remembered it must be recalled from ltm.
  • Describe the stm
    • Coding = mainly acoustically
    • Duration = 18-30 secs
    • Capacity = 7+/-2 items
  • Describe the ltm
    • Coding = mainly semantically
    • Duration = 'up to a lifetime'
    • Capacity = unknown/unlimited
  • How does a memory process from stm to ltm
    prolonged maintenance rehearsal
  • Describe the sensory register
    • Decides if the stimulus is important to remember
    • Coding = sense specific (echoic - auditory/iconic - visual)
    • Duration = 0.5 secs
    • Capacity = Very large (all sensory experience)
    • Pay attention to stimuli if important
