potato required practical

Cards (18)

    1. use of a cork to cut out three cylinders from a potato
  • 2. cut of the ends and use a ruler to make sure theyre all equal length.
  • 3. record length on a a results table
  • 4. measure the weight using mass balance
  • 5. put one potato cylinder in a boiling tube
  • 6. use a measuring cylinder to measure 10 ml of distilled water
  • 7. pour in the boiling tube and label it distilled water
  • 8. then repeat using 0.25 mol of sucrose and 0.5 mol of sucrose in seperate boiling tubes all need to be 10 ml
  • 9. leave it for some time ( the longer the more accurate)
  • 10. take out the potato using a sieve pouring out he water in the sink
  • 11. roll potato on a kitchen towel to get rid of excess moisture (not too much bc it can suck out water from the potato)
  • 12. measure the new length with a ruler
  • 13. measure new mass with mass balance.
  • 14. record your results and the change. (difference)
  • 15. calculate the percentage mass: %change = change/initial amount.
    • control variable - the amount of solution that is added to the test tube
  • independent variable - the concentration of sucrose
  • dependent variable - the rate of osmosis
