KEY RESEARCH STUDY: Baddeley (1966)

Cards (5)

  • What was Baddeley study?
The coding in the STM and LTM, which one is acoustic or semantic.
  • What was Baddeley's procedure?
Participants recalling straight after hearing and 20 minutes after hearing either: acoustically similar (cat, can, cab); acoustically dissimilar (pit, few cow); semantically similar (great, large, big); semantically dissimilar (good, huge, hot)
  • What was Baddeley's findings?
Immediate recall worse with acoustically similar words (STM is acoustic). Recall after 20 minutes worse with semantically similar words (LTM is semantic).
  • What was a strength of Baddeley's study?
Identified 2 memory stores - led to development of MSM
  • What was a limitation of Baddele's study?
Artificial Stimuli (words had no personal meaning to participants) - cannot be applied to everyday life
    • With meaningful information, people use semantic coding - limited application
