    • agreed: US & UK open ‘2nd front’ on germany bc USSR suffered heavily_ stalin declare war on japan once ww2 over_ general agreement on international body to settle disputes through talk>war = led to formation of UN
    • impacts: stalin happy abt ‘2nd front’ bc he thought west delaying it on purpose to weakan ussr_ churchill mad bc he not want front in west_ roosevelt thought british coloanism was a greater threat than ussr = tension
  • yalta conference, february 1945
    • agree: germany divide into 4 zones and pay $20 billion reparations, 50% going to USSR_ UN set up in apr 1954_ stalin join war against japan 3 months after defeat of germany_ future governments in east eu would have free elections
    • impacts: roosevelt & stalin happy on free elections BUT poland hard to solve bc stalin want it to be pro communism but UK support non-communist london poles
  • potsdam conference, august 1945: truman, attlee, stalin
    • agree: germany now divided into 4 zones, as was berlin (despite being USSR’s territory)
    • impacts: truman wanted to look hard to stalin; delayed conference until bomb ready because he thought it would give him the upper hand_ truman objected poland’s border agreement and wanted a new government with less communist influence
  • impacts of atomic bomb
    • 6th august 1945, US bombed hiroshima = 12k tonnes of TNT & 120k+ people died
    • 9th august, nagisaki bombed
    the bomb dramatically INCREASED TENSION_ atomic weapons kill many so US & USSR reluctant to go to war = arm’s race
