Types of sampling

Cards (10)

  • Random - Unbiased picking . All members have an equal chance of being picked
  • Opportunity - Asking people there if they want to take part in the experiment .
  • Volunteer - Consists of people who volunteered .
  • Systematic - Choosing every nth member of the population .
  • Stratified - Splitting the sample up into groups based on certain characteristics , then randomly selecting from each group.
  • You can do random sampling through:
Writing everyone's name down on little bits of paper and pulling the amount of names needed for the desired sampled size -make sure factors like: Same size paper, Picker should be blindfolded, Hat shook each time-
Giving everyone a number and using a random number generator on the computer to pick certain people until the desired sample size is reached .
  • You can do opportunity sampling through:
Asking people who are around and available
  • You can do volunteering sampling through:
Researcher putting an advert online/in a newspaper and waiting for people to apply
  • You can do systematic sampling through:
    Producing a sampling frame
  • You can do stratified sampling through:
Choosing a sample which consists of participants from each category in the same proportion. Identify your subgroups that make up the target population then work out the proportions that are representative.
