Milgram's sample consisted of 40 males aged between 20-50 with a variety of jobs (teachers, engineers, etc) and levels of education (hadn't finished elementary school, doctorates, etc), who responded to an advertisement in the New Haven newspaper.
Milgram's participants believed they were participating in a study of memory and learning and were each paid $4.50 for their participation. However, they were told that they would receive the money for attending the lab and could keep it regardless of what happened after they arrived.
