C5.5 Making copper salt

Cards (7)

  • What is the equation for this reaction?
    Sulfuric acid + copper(II) oxide -> copper(II) sulfate + water
    H2SO4 + CuO -> CuSO4 + H2O
  • What is the first step in making a copper salt?
    Add insoluble copper oxide to sulfuric acid and stir. Warm gently on a tripod and gauze (do not boil)
  • What colour will the solution turn as the reaction occurs
    Blue whixh shows that copper sulfate is being formed. There is also excess black copper oxide
  • What should you do once the reaction is complete?
    Filter the solution to remove excess copper oxide
  • What safety precautions should be taken?
    Wear eye protection, amd do not boil the acid
  • How do you get the salt crystals from the solution
    You can evaporate the water so that crystals of copper sulfate start to form. Stop heating when you see the first crystals appear at the edge if the solution. Then leave for the rest of the water to slowly evaporate, leaving you with larger crystals
  • How cam you remove ant excess solution on the crystals
    Dab them clean with filter paper and leave to dry
