Biomes

• Biome is an area that has the same climate (weather)

  and the same organisms that live there.
• There are 6 land biomes and 2 water biomes
• Where is the tundra?

  • Around the North Pole and near the Arctic Ocean
• Climate of tundra

  • Very cold and dry

  • Temperature: less than -5°C

  • Only has 25 centimeters or less of rain every year
• Permafrost: the dirt that is always frozen
• Coniferous (Boreal) Forest is cold and snowy
• Boreal forests’ ground is frozen in the winter
• Boreal forest is swampy in the spring
• Coniferous forests are in In Canada, Alaska, northern Asia, and northern Europe
• Conifer trees (have cones)

  • Have needles covered with wax
• Deciduous forests’ climate in summers are warm
• Deciduous forest Gets 75 centimeters of rain every year
• Deciduous forests are between northeastern United States and Canada.

  Some are in the eastern United States. Others grow in Europe and

  eastern Asia.
• There are 2 main types of rain forests:

  Temperate Rain Forests and Tropical Rain

  Forests.
• Temperate forest means having moderate

  temperatures. Receives more than 300 cm of

  rain per year.
• tropical rain forests are Found in regions close

  to the equator

  • Warm and humid all

  year long.

  • Lots of precipitation.

  • Diverse plant growth.

  • Gets almost 10 feet of rain

  every year.

• The largest tropical rainforest is in South America. It is called the

  Amazon rain forest. They are also found in central Africa, Central

  America, Southeast Asia, Hawaii, and a small area of Australia.
• Canopy: A leafy roof

  formed by the tallest

  trees.
• Understory: A second

  layer of shorter trees

  and vines.
• There are 2 kinds of grasslands.
• Temperate grasslands: called prairies
• Tropical grasslands: called savannas
• All grasslands get between 25 and 75 centimeters of rain every yea
• The largest grassland is in Africa
• The most important plant is grass
• There are 2 kinds of deserts.
• hot desserts gets less than 25 centimeters of rain every year

  * hot during the day and cool at night
• cold desserts gets less than 25 centimeters of rain every year

  * cold all of the time
• The marine biome is the ocean biome
• Estuary: Where freshwater of a river meets

  saltwater of the ocean.
• Intertidal Zone: The area between the highest high

  tide line and the lowest low tide line.
• Neritic Zone: The area below the low tide line
• Open Ocean: Separated into two zones:
• Freshwater means it does not have salt in it
• The special kind of water is an estuary
