Ways of studying the Brain

  • What are the four methods of studying the brain?
    • Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)
    • Electroencephalogram (EEG)
    • Event Related Potentials (ERPs)
    • Post-mortem examination
  • Post-Mortem examination
This is where the brain is analysed post-death
    • likely the brain of a person with a rare disorder and have experienced unusual deficits in cognitive processes or behaviour during their life
    • Areas of damage within the brain are examined to establish the likely cause of the affliction the person experienced -> may involve comparison with a neurotypical brain to ascertain the extent of the difference
  • fMRI
Works by detecting the changes in both blood oxygenation and flow that occur due to neural activity in specific parts of the brain
  • EEG
Theses record tiny electrical impulses in the brain via electrodes that are fixed to the patient's scalp. It records the brainwave patterns from the action of millions of neurons, giving an overall account of brain activity
  • ERPs
Statistical analysis of EEG data which allows the brain's electrophysical response to a specific sensory, cognitive or motor event to be isolated
