  • Ovarian Cycle
    • series of events in the ovaries that occur during and after the maturation of the oocyte
  • Follicular phase
    • three-thirty follicles begin to grow
    • only on of these follicles (dominant follicle) continues to grow while the other stimulated follicles disintegrate
    • lasts for about 13-14 days
  • Ovulatory Phase
    • dominant follicle bulges from the surface of the ovary and ruptures, releasing the oocyte
    • lasts for 16-32 hours
  • Luteal phase
    • begin after ovulation
    • lasts about 14 days, unless fertilization occurs
    • ruptured follicle forms a structure called a corpus luteum which secretes progesterone and estrogen.

  • Menstrual flow phase
    • lining of the endometrium is thick with fluids and nutrients designed to nourish the embryo
    • If there is no fertilization, the top layers of the endometrium will be shed and menstrual bleeding occur.
    • lasts for 3-7 days with an average of 5 days
  • Proliferative phase
    • regeneration and thickening of the endometrium takes place
    • lasts for about 1-2 weeks
  • Secretory phase
    • endometrium continues to thicken and the vascularization of the endometrium increases
    • it develops gland that secrete glycogen-rich fluid to nourish a potential fetus
    • lasts for 2 weeks
