  • Participation rates in sport
    Some sports are more popular in some countries than others, due to physical sports improving our health the government recommends everyone to do at least some exercise.
  • Socio-economic groups
    Someone who is highly paid is more likely to do a sport that costs more like golf, Avalibilty is also a factor as some sports may be harder to get to like rock climbing, lastly time, some sports are time-consuming and people have commitments like families.
  • Gender in sport
    lack of participation from the other gender can be due to stereotypes or the following:
    Image- Some men might not want to dance as it's seen as a womanly thing to do, vice versa. this can prevent someone taking part.
    Cost- Women usually earn less than men.
    Time- traditionally women have less time as they have to look after kids and home so they have less time for sport.
  • Age in sport
    Some sports may only allow certain ages to compete or it can be due to the following:
    Access- Some sports clubs may only let juniors play on the weekend but if they have a weekend job it means they can't compete.
    Cost- Some age groups may not be able to afford sport.
    Time- most adults work therefore less time.
    Nature of activity- as you get older a high-intensity sport will start to get harder to do.
  • Ethnicity in sport
    Cultural influences- Some people may be pushed by family to do a sport based on where there from.
    Sterotyping- People may be pushed towards or away from a sport due to what others think.
    Cost- Some ethnic groups will have less money then others so won't be able to afford the sport.
  • Disability in sport
    Disability may influence decisions in sports:
    Avalibitlty- Lack of facilities to help disabled compete.
    Cost- Specialised equipment can be costly.
    Access- Lack of ramps or physical barriers preventing the disabled from competing.
    Stereotyping- people believing disabled people cant compete in a certain sport may affect disabled people wanting to join.

    The relationship between Commercialisation, Sport and Media is essential to maximise profit.
  • Commercialisation
    These are organisations that make a profit from events.
    They use sport and media to get their product seen by millions via advertising, sponsorship and endorsement. For example, Nike logo on football shirt.
  • Media
    The media provide entertainment to the viewer by showing the sport and organisation that wants a profit.
    They need funding so organisations that want to show their product can fund them to carry on showing sport.
  • Sport
    The sport needs funding for equipment, facilities and competitions.
    They get there funding through media and commercialisation.
  • Advantages of commercialisation
    SPONSOR: Media can show products during breaks, Brand names can be seen around Venu. Raised awareness of brand leading to more sales.
    SPORT: More media coverage means larger sports means more commercial interest leading to more funding to run events.
    SPECTATOR: More coverage, replays, Ability to buy clothes for the team.
    PERFOMER: Can be paid millions to endorse product, can use top quality product to perform with.
  • Disadvantages of commercialisation
    SPONSOR: The media may not get enough viewers, organisations don't get exposure they want, team doesn't perform well, team cheats give sponsors bad reputation.
    SPORT: Sports change to get more views, Breaks in play for advertising purposes, smaller sports get lack of sponsorship.
    PERFORMER: Product may give performer bad image, pressure to win, no privacy, Restricted to sponsors' clothes.
    SPECTATOR: HIgh subscription costs, pay-per-view, high-cost merchandise.
  • Sportsmanship
    Displaying good conduct and what you should see in a sport.
    Being honest, respectful, fair.
    Sportsmanship creates: Good role models, a positive image of sport, pride.
  • Gamesmanship
    Bending rules to gain an unfair advantage.
    Time-wasting, entering weak team if following match is more important, lying.
    Gamesmanship creates: Bad role models, bad reputation for the sport, dissatisfaction.
  • Deviance
    Unacceptable behaviour in sports that is against rules.
    Cheating, Drugs, Racism, Sexism, Matchfixing, Violence.
    People do this for: Fame, money, sponsorship, Prizes, Pressure to win.
    What are the consequences- If you get caught you could face: Red-cards, fines, ban from sport, bad reputation, Prison.
    How to prevent deviance: Random drug test, sportsmanship awards, anti-drug campaigns.
