• He found that they judged pupils according to how closeley they fitted the "ideal pupil"
• Pupils work, conduct and appearance were key influenced teachers judgments
• children from middle-class backgrounds were the closest to the ideal
• middle class were the furthest away from it as they were regarded as badly behaved
