  • Kamikaze - the poem is written from the perspective of a kamikaze pilot, who has been sent on a suicide mission but the pilot turns around and gets shunned out of society. It was written because Beatrice Garland was shocked by how men were willing to die for something they believed in (effects of patriotism). It was influenced by the twin towers.

    “the sky was red” – This metaphorical description of the sky being ‘red’ suggests danger and bloodshed, foreshadowing the violent act about to take place.

    ‘- yes grandfather‘s boat -‘ - injection of speech, makes the poem story like but it’s not told from the pilot showing how he is absent.

  • War photographer - the poem shows the experience a war photographer goes through and the last effects it has on people, PTSD.
    Carol Ann Duffy had a friend that was a war photographer so she got his anger first hand of not being able to help others and how the newspaper decided which ones were worthy enough to write about.

    ’Belfast. Biuret. Phnom Penh.’ - plosive like the bombs which go off in these places, makes the idea of war hit the person suddenly.

    ‘His hands which did not tremble then though seem to now’ - shows the effects of war, when the photographer is alone he struggles even though he is safe he feels the guilt and anger as if he was still there. PTSD.

    ‘How the blood stained into foreign dust’ - contrast how people in England who read the newspapers will easily forget it but the individuals it effected will never be able to forget, shows why the photographer is angry. Memory.
