Glacier

Cards (2)

  • What is the formation of a glacier?
Snow gathers in a N/NE facing hollow. As this is the shaded side of the mountain, snow lies longer and accumulates. After several years the snow compresses to névé and after 40-50 years compresses to form true glacial ice (blue ice). Gravity causes the glacier to move downhill in a rotational movement (when the zone of accumulation exceeds the zone of ablation)
  • Explain Formation of Glacier (2) (Processes)
The glacier erodes using the processes of plucking, abrasion, and freeze-thaw (explain)
