quantitative + qualitative data

  • quantitative data: type of data that can be measured numerically by the psychologist so that statistical analysis can be completed.
    • data is easy to analyse.
    • easier to collect from a large group of ppts.
    - tends to lose the "human level" of behaviour.
    - tends to offer a very shallow view of behaviour.
  • qualitative data: type of data which can be observed, but not measured numerically, usually takes the forms of words, thoughts and feelings.
    • can offer a more individualised "human" view of behaviour.
    • provides in-depth, detailed data.
    • can be difficult to analyse.
    • data tends to come from a limited number of people.
