  1. Pyruvate formed from glycolysis are pumped into matrix of mitochondria by active transport.
  2. Pyruvate undergoes oxidative decarboxylation- carbon dioxide is removed, hydrogen is removed and combines with NAD to form NADH.
  3. The resulting 2-carbon acetyl group is bound to coenzyme A forming acetyl coenzyme A.
