Types of Conformity

Cards (5)

  • Conformity is a change in behaviour or belief as a result of real or ''imagined'' group pressure. It is not simply acting like others but also being affected by how they act. You ''consciously'' act different from the way you would act alone.
  • Kelman in 1958 identified 3 different types of conformity.
  • Compliance (type) - involves publicly acting in accord with social pressure while privately disagreeing. It does not change the person’s underlying attitudes towards things, just their public behaviour (temporary)
Eg supporting man u around friends who support but as soon as you get home watching Chelsea.
  • Identification (type) - adopt the behaviour of a group, publicly and
privately, because you value group membership. However, once you
leave the group, these attitudes may fade. (temporary)
Eg may identify as a true man u fan but as soon as you move away to another city, you may change the team you support.
  • Internalisation (type) - a true change of private views to match group
views. This is both a public and private change in attitude, and it’s
permanent. They become part of one’s own value system, not dependant on the presence of the group.
Eg man u fan until death.
